Such a shame, I had tried to go with two children in April and knowing that they close at 4, got there at 2.02 and there was a sign on the shack saying closed. I took the kids to the fun factory instead as I couldn't just take them home. I then went Beginning of May and got there at 1.15 and was told it was closed, I pointed out that after reading their Facebook page and website that we are not digging our own and I thought it was 2, and at that point we were then able to mine. We went once in June this time with 3 kids without issue. My 13 year old and I drove from the Otto border yesterday 7/17/15 to the mine. She was excited as she has loved the Cherokee mine above all others. We saw people mining so drove down to the shack where there was a sign saying mine closed today. Again, nothing on the Facebook page or website and once again there were people there. We were less than happy. I have just called 7/18/15 to make sure that they are open as she wants to go although I have reservations and to find out if it won't be a wasted trip and after ringing several times it goes to voicemail. I know it's under new ownership and they obviously and understandably want to do things differently than the old owners but I'm finding it really hard to understand their business model. Yes we are upset, we only spent about $300 per year mining there and I know others would spend more but that'd $300 through no fault of our own which is going to have to find a new home. :-(

I had a wonderful time at the mine. The owners were very helpful and went thru my rejects to make sure I didn't miss anything. After 4 buckets I had approx. 6-8 garnets and two sapphires. Both are being faceted at a local shop. He tells me one is fine quality and the other will possibly make a pear shaped stone. stone. :-D :-D 6(^)6

My husband & I will be celebrating 40 years together in couple of weeks. Found out that is your Ruby Anniversary. Decided to go ruby mining & found this website. If one is found, we will have me a new ring made. Any info is appreciated about possibility of finding anything here with 6 buckets of soil. Thanks! Kim

Greetings Gemhunters!

We are the new owners of Cherokee Ruby & Sapphire Mine.

Ray has told us that he and Mom will stick around for a while to make this a smooth transition, so there will be familiar faces at the mine.

We are keeping Cherokee UNSALTED.

We will be making some physical improvements to the mine. First items are replacing seating boards and painting the buildings. Other improvements will follow.

We are posting this info here at this time because we are transitioning the website key but it isn't done yet.

New pricing is:

$25 admission includes two buckets of paydirt.

$30 Dig-Your-Own 6 buckets.

Last dig your own time is 3PM.

We open on MAY FIRST. If you come on the old opening date, you will have a bad April Fools' Day joke...

Thank you, and see you on May First!

Had the best time learning from Maria last Thursday (10/9). There were also some fellow M.A.G.M.A. members with great advice to pass on. We had a rain shower to add to the mud fun. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

Mom, Tony, and Ray made our vacation the best I have ever had! They not only teach you what to do look for, but also help you double check all of your work to make sure you didn't miss anything. If you do miss something, they are sure to find it and will let you keep it anyway! Our lack of expertise caused us to miss an 8 carat pink sapphire that they found right away :] My boyfriend and I are planning to turn it into an engagement ring so I can keep it with me for the rest of my life. We also found about 15 pieces of garnet, some moonstone, rhodonite and tons of beautiful unknown stones.

The people are amazing company and the atmosphere is sublime. I saw tons of humming birds and colorful butterflies circling around the wooded mountains where we sat by the rushing creek hunting for our gems.

The experience was rewarding, relaxing, fun, and very addicting. I can't wait to go back next year!

Very nice place. The lady there gave a lovely presentation on the mines available minerals. Best sapphire I found was one someone had dropped where I was sitting. Found 2 others on my own, lots of small pieces of silminite, rutile and garnet chips. The highlight was the large native american spearhead I found. Told you guys I would send pictures to you but you don't have an email to send them to listed. Email me and I will get them to you. Thanks again!

We had a wonderful time digging in the dirty! Each of us found at least one of the major gemstones possible at the mine to include a 5.9 and a 4.5 sapphire, many garnets, rutile, and siliminite.

We are definitely coming back. 6(^)6

We loved our visit to Cherokee Mine. It was our 20th anniversary & I wanted to 'DIG IN THE DIRT." Well, I found a 53.8 carat star sapphire! What a great anniversary gift! The owners were so nice, very helpful. And they go through your tailings to make sure you haven't overlooked any treasure. We'll definitely be back! 6(^)6

We found some really beautiful stuff. My brother found a 43 carat start sapphire that was unbelievably beautiful.
