I can not express in depth the wonderful experiance i had at the cherokee mines. It was a first time for my son and myself and we loved it. The owner is truely one of the kindest and patient human i have met. I live too far away to come often, but i will be back because of how wonderful our time was at this mine. Found many treasures!

Great site, looking forward to a visit for my birthday mid July this year. It will be my 50th, and I ambulate via manual wheelchair. Very much looking forward to the experience and possibly finding a large Ruby as it is my birthstone.

We were there on October 30th, the last customers of the day. Maria, you are an absolutely wonderful lady. You went above and beyond to make sure all our treasures were found. Thanks so much. We truly had a good time. Thanks also for telling us about Bob. The larger garnet was 3.5 carats. He's making that one into a pendant and a couple of the smaller ones will be stud earrings. He'll be mailing them to me in about two weeks.

We hope to come back in the spring. Thanks again for being so gracious and having patience. Jamie and Richie

We had a great day! With the help of Ray and Maria we found a 2 ct beautiful pink sapphire and a large piece of siliminite which the local gem cutter said we could get 2 or 3 good size gems out of it. We also found some garnet and are having 3 gems cutt. Great memories and awesome finds for only 3 hrs of work. We will return again! Thanks Maria and Ray!

We picked the Cherokee Mine because it was unsalted. What we found was a fun, relaxing - even educational introduction to gem mining. The mine is a family business - run by generous, kind people. The owners were knowledgeable and helpful - working through our finds to ensure we found everything (and gently pointed out our rocks). Next time we are in the area, this stop will be at the top of our list.

Had a great time and lucked out with the weather today. Lots of fun pulling out some interesting small finds. Big excitement watching the couple next to us pull a huge beautiful ruby!

We were on a road trip and were looking for a place to mine. The Cherokee mine stood out as the only unsalted mine in the area. The area was beautiful, the mine was exactly what we were looking for; however, what stood out the most were the friendliness and helpfulness of the owners, Maria and Ray. They truly made the trip memorable - so much that we brought our family back one week later. We highly recommend staying at the Cabins - looking forward to our next trip.

:-D Best Mine ever!!! The owners were very knowledgeable, friendly, and excited about what they do. I found a really nice sapphire and some really cool garnets... along w/ some other stones. It is a beautiful place and they also have the coolest cabin in the woods that was really reasonably priced. Highly recommend this mine-it is the only one that is not salted. Enjoy! Thanks for everything Ray and Maria:)

Joanne and I spent 3 wonderful hours panning for precious gems at your lovely location on April 6. Maria "you have the patience of a saint" thank you and Ray so very much for a lovely birthday experience! I found exactly what I came for- a beautiful deep red Cowee River Valley ruby as well as several pink and blue sapphires. As Ray said "the mountain gods favored me" on my birthday! Bob is cutting my stones now and I can't wait to see what he comes up with.

We spent the afternoon mining for gems and we had a great time, despite the cold. Maria was super helpful in showing us what to look for and even went through our discards to make sure we didn't miss anything. I almost threw out a 37 carat pink star sapphire because it was broken and did not have a hexagonal shape. Maria pointed it out to me and I took it to the lapidary. I am having it cut to make into a necklace. We will be back when the weather warms up! I recommend this place to anyone who wants an authentic native mining experience!
